Mathematics | Learning Times Tables: Easy!
Updated: Feb 5, 2021
Instant recall of times tables is essential to success in all areas of maths. Without this ability, children lack the basic tools to decode even simple calculations. Once children are fluent in the basic multiplication and division facts, then their working memory is freed up from having to make simple calculations, and can think more deeply about the conceptual underpinnings of a problem.
The government have now put a much greater importance on learning multiplication facts as this year, students in year 4 were due to be the first cohort to complete a mandatory multiplication tables check. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, all exams, including the multiplication check, have been cancelled for 2020.
At Tech Tutors, we have come up with a list of ways that you can support your child to learn their times tables. Remember repetition is key! The more they practice, the better they will be!
1. Look for patterns
If you know your two times table, then you are also able to work out your 4 times table. See the pattern below.
0 2 4 6 8 10 12 14 16 18 20
0 4 8 12 16 20
2. Understand the rule of commutativity
Children need to understand that multiplication can be done in any order. See the example below.
3 x 2 = 6
2 x 3 = 6
3. Oral activities
Songs, rhymes, raps and stories are all useful tools for helping children memorise multiplication facts. Watch the video below on the three times table.
4. Practical activities
It’s important that children regularly write out the times tables, in addition to saying them out loud. Ask your child to show a physical representation of that times table with objects.

5. Games
Make learning their times tables fun by playing games online or as a family. There are a number of different games you can play online such as Hit the Button, Maths Fishing, Funky Mummy and Coconut Multiples.
