Home School | Getting Your Children to do their Homework
Updated: Feb 5, 2021
Homework time can be dreaded by both parents and children, but it doesn’t have to be! At Tech Tutors, we have come up with some simple ways to make homework easier.

Make a Homework Routine
If homework becomes part of their normal routine, it will make your life much easier. First of all, decide what days and times your child will need to do their homework. Then, together decide on a space where they will complete their homework without distractions.
Decide How Much Time You Should Spend on Your Homework
It is important to have realistic expectations for the amount of your your child will spend on their homework. For children in primary school this may be 20 minutes a day. However, we would expect the timings to increase with age. Ensure your child is aware of your expectations.
Get Your Resources Ready
Try to make sure they have everything they need before sitting down to do their homework. This will mean that they can get started straight away without the need to wander around to look for items.
Get Your Child to Take Responsibility for Their Homework
It is great when parents take an interest in their child’s learning. However, it can often be too tempting to provide that little bit too much support. Encourage your child to have a go first before asking for help. Remember, children will learn from their mistakes.
Be Patient
Doing homework can be a stressful time for both children and parents. Remember to praise the good things! Try not to get cross if they don’t understand something straight away. Try having a break and coming back to it another day.
