What is dyscalculia?

You have more than likely heard of dyslexia, which is is a learning disorder that involves difficulty reading due to problems identifying speech sounds and learning how they relate to letters and words. However, you may not have heard of dyscalculia. Dyscalculia, which is sometimes known as number blindness, is a learning disorder that involves great difficulty with numeracy, arithmetic and mathematical concepts. Difficulties associated with dyscalculia include: counting backwards, difficulty reading analogue clocks, memorising numbers, prices and phone numbers, carrying and borrowing, placing values, planning, scheduling and being on time, school time tables and deadlines. Remember, just like dyslexia, dyscalculia is not necessarily associated with low intelligence. It just indicates a difficulty with one function of the brain.
