Private Tuition | Setting SMART Targets to Guide Tuition
Updated: Sep 29, 2020
Early goal setting is essential for students as it helps with motivation, giving students a clear sense of direction. It is important to ensure these targets are SMART so that students are not overwhelmed or daunted by the journey ahead.

What are SMART targets?
SMART is an acronym that we use our students to help guide the target setting process. It is likely that they have heard this term before at school.
Specific: What is it that you want to accomplish?
Measurable: How will you know when the goal is accomplished?
Attainable: Is it realistic?
Relevant: Does this target help to achieve a wider goal?
Time-sensitive: When is the deadline for meeting this target?
Setting SMART targets with your students
1. Specific
Think about your wider goal e.g. I want to improve my English, and then begin thinking about the steps you need to take to achieve this target. These steps will become your SMART targets e.g. I want to improve my punctuation or I want to make my writing more descriptive.
2. Measurable
All goals need to be measurable. This way, progress can easily be measured and once targets are met, new targets can be set to accelerate learning.
3. Achievable
It is important that SMART targets are small steps that are achievable. However, that doesn’t mean that they should be easy. It is important that the targets present an appropriate amount of challenge.
4. Relevant
It is important that the student and tutor work together to decide upon SMART targets to ensure the target is relevant and personal.
5. Time Sensitive
Finally, the targets that you set should have a realistic deadline.
